Children across Devon and Cornwall could find themselves face to face with medieval knights and troublesome Tudors this summer, as English Heritage hosts a series of popular ‘Children’s Trails’. Youngsters will be able to join in unique trails taking place at a number of historic locations.

English Heritage says the trails, which are free with the entry, will bring history to life by encouraging children to explore and discover more about the locations with a fun fact sheet.

Medieval Knight Trails (until Sunday 4 June - 10am – 5pm – also on Saturday 22 July to Sunday 3 September) take place at Berry Pomeroy, Okehampton, and Restormel Castles.

An English Heritage spokesman tells me: “The medieval knights have been missing since their last battle, and the Queen is calling on all children to search the castle grounds to seek out the mini models. The brave children that manage to retrieve all the Knights will be rewarded with a special badge of honour by the Queen.”

Tudor Travellers trails (same dates as above) will take place at St. Mawes Castle. “King Henry VIII and his six wives have disappeared,” says the spokesman. “And English Heritage needs the secret seven to be found urgently. We also need detectives to unlock the grisly truth behind the untimely deaths of Anne Boleyn and Kathryn Howard. All children will need to keep their heads to complete this trail and will receive a special prize on completion.”

Callie Saxty, head of English Heritage’s visitor operations says, “Our Children’s Trails are the perfect way to keep children entertained whilst educating them on the history of each location. The Children’s Trails keep the kids occupied allowing parents to enjoy the sites at a leisurely pace and in peace and quiet.”
